ACTIVITIES IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM
CHILD-LED, TEACHER-GUIDED DISCOVERY
Look Deeper
As a center that focuses on supporting and guiding "the whole child", we understand that early growth is led by their interests and passions within their environments. By designing classrooms and activities that support such aspects, the teachers are able to provide rich experiences that help children learn about their world. Some examples of discovery found in and out of the classrooms are child-led science experiments, nature walks, dramatic play, outside play, group discussions, food and nutrition activities, read-alouds, art projects, block building, manipulative sorting, etc.
FAMILY VOLUNTEERING
Bridging the Gap
Families are invaluable partners in helping us create a nurturing and effective learning environment for children. When parents and family members engage directly in the classroom or through support activities, they bring unique perspectives and skills that enrich the educational experience. Their involvement fosters a stronger sense of community and provides children with additional role models and support. Moreover, parent volunteers help bridge the gap between home and school, reinforcing the importance of education and encouraging a collaborative approach to learning. By valuing and encouraging parent volunteering, through our Open Door Policy, we enhance not only the quality of our programs but also the overall developmental journey of every child in our care.
WOW! EXPERIENCE ACTIVITIES
Jump In
Experiential Activities are special activities we plan to enhance the Head Start child's educational learning experiences. Such experiences allow children to connect concepts learned in the classroom setting to real-world concepts that they might experience outside of the classroom. Some of the experiential activities we plan annually include the Adams State University Zacheis Planetarium, Goat farm, Pueblo Zoo, Grimway Carrots, Rocky Farms Potato Farm, Pumpkin Patch, Alamosa Airport, etc.
KINDERGARTEN TRANSITIONING
Getting Ready
Kindergarten Transition is a transition plan we develop on an annual basis- working closely with the local public school by setting monthly school visits for children entering Kindergarten. This crucial period marks the shift from the familiar, nurturing environment of early childhood education to the more structured setting of elementary school. Effective transition strategies like Kindergarten Transition are vital as they help ease children’s adjustment, reduce anxiety, and promote a positive attitude towards learning. By focusing on seamless transitions, we ensure that children build on the skills and confidence they’ve developed, setting a strong foundation for future academic success. Moreover, this process fosters collaboration between educators, parents, and schools, creating a supportive network that prioritizes the child's well-being and growth. In valuing and investing in kindergarten transitions, we not only support individual children but also strengthen the educational continuum, benefiting the entire community. There are two transition meetings held for parents throughout the year (once in the Fall and once in the Spring). The purpose of these meetings is to help parents understand and prepare for what will be expected.
